La Guaragua has established itself as a National and International Dance Theater Festival with its own unique identity. It was born from the need to explore this genre through an annual international program held in various unconventional spaces, educational institutions, theaters, parishes, and communities. The festival encourages artistic creation, the dissemination, production, and circulation of performances, as well as workshops, debates, and a platform for reflection on processes, analyses, and theoretical and practical methodologies. This platform is central to one of the festival's thematic axes: Encounters of Knowledge.
Art in general, and the performing arts in particular, are constantly evolving, with new exploration techniques emerging from established ones. To this end, La Guaragua presents a program that fosters research, exploration, development, and diversification of local, national, and international performing arts offerings. In this way, it becomes a space where the dramaturgy of the actor/dancer or dancer/actor can be explored, understanding their creative work through the scenic action that flows with an expressive physical code, the why of movement, and the purpose of movement.
JEGAL DANCE THEATRE conceived and produced the four editions of the Festival. These editions have fostered dialogue between different sectors of the community, enabling understanding and reflection on cultural realities, participation in the cultural life of the community, and the promotion and development of culture in a democratic and pluralistic manner. This goal is achieved by revitalizing collective memory through Dance Theater, as well as facilitating the exchange of creative, experimental, and organizational processes aimed at consolidating aesthetic and social proposals. The Festival also disseminates the work of local, national, and international collectives and artists.
Founded on May 29, 1971, it is an independent group. For 46 years, it has been re-evaluating the customs, legends, and traditions of our country through performance.
Their mission is to strengthen Ecuadorian identity, enhancing our country's rich multicultural, multiethnic, and ancestral heritage through research, performance, and the dissemination of cultural works and projects in the performing arts.
