Brazilian folklore is renowned worldwide for its joy, infectious rhythms, and the diverse artistic and musical expressions that have made the country stand out on the global stage. This success stems from a culture shaped by both African and European influences—arising from both voluntary immigration and forced migration, such as the slave trade—with each ethnic group contributing its own unique characteristics to the nation's music and dance. Audiences can experience this firsthand through the performance of the "Boi Brilho da Ilha" group from São Luís—capital of the northern state of Maranhão—which has been showcasing Brazilian folklore and culture internationally for 25 years. In addition to the famous samba and dances with distinct African roots, the group will perform the *Bumba-boi*, the dance that best represents their region. The *Bumba-boi* tells the story of a slave named Francisco who, in order to satisfy his pregnant wife's craving for an ox tongue, kills the farm owner's ox. Realizing the danger of his actions, he summons shamans and healers in hopes of reviving the animal. The ox comes back to life, and the community celebrates.
