The "Pro Loco Uta" folk group was founded in 1992 under the name "Città di Uta" by a group of people united by the desire to safeguard the survival of certain forms of Sardinian folk art.
2002 was a year of significant changes; the group's members, encouraged by their comparison with the work of several island groups and by the constructive criticism of experts and enthusiasts of Sardinian folk traditions, began to question their own work and worked to give the group a new and improved image and credibility. In the same year, the group joined the Pro Loco, changed its name to its current one, and began to broaden its scope.
Regarding the performance of the dances, since 2002, in keeping with the objectives of change, greater attention has been paid to understanding the specificity of each dance, in an attempt to grasp their true meaning and to capture and convey their original spirit.
This is the main reason why the group decided to abandon the "spectacular" performance of the dances in favor of a more traditional and sometimes more austere style.
As for the traditional costumes worn today, both women's and men's, they are primarily the result of a reconstruction based on the indications provided by Goffredo Casalis in his Historical and Statistical Dictionary of the Kingdom of Sardinia, compiled in the first half of the 19th century by order of the King of Piedmont, as well as careful field research conducted at home
by home of the elderly people of Uta. The women wear many original ancient garments.
The “Pro Loco Uta” folk group is also involved in organizing BALLUS "International Folklore Meeting", which takes place between the last week of July and the first of August and which has so far hosted many important groups from Sardinia and all over the world.
